Aromatics are named for their distinctive, perfume-like smell; the main ones, benzene, toluene and the xylenes, are basic chemicals behind many consumer products.

India has surplus aromatics, mainly benzene, and was a net exporter for more than half a decade till 2023-24. In 2024-25 (latest estimate), higher imports of orthoxylene and paraxylene made it a small net importer. Many domestic refineries plan to add aromatics capacity soon. Prices swing hard because they track international crude oil, and with shifting feedstock costs, changing demand and many downstream uses, aromatics sit at the centre of the petrochemicals and chemicals market.
