PTA industry has witnessed astounding growth over the years. The installed capacity has now increased to 3,873 KTPA in 2013-2014, growing with a CAGR of 9.4%. It is expected to cross the 6 million metric tons per annum mark by 2017. The growing demand for PTA is fuelled primarily by its consumption in the textile industry as a substitute for cotton, as cotton's supply is limited.
Terephthalic acid is a widely used fibre intermediate and ranks 25th in the tonnage of all chemicals produced in the world. The primary use of PTA is as a raw material in the manufacture of high-performance multi-purpose plastics such as polybutyl terephthalate (PBT) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). These in turn have a number of applications in textiles, packaging, furnishing, consumer goods, resins and coating industries.
