India, once a large net exporter of paraxylene, has been a net importer for the last two years as exports fell sharply and imports rose to meet PTA industry demand.

Almost all paraxylene becomes purified terephthalic acid (PTA), for polyester fibre and filament yarn, PET bottle resin and polyester film. PTA consumption in India grew about 5.4% a year from 2017-18 to 2025-26, to an estimated 5.8 million MT, and new PTA capacity, such as IndianOil's 1.2 million MT per annum plant at Paradip, will add to paraxylene demand.

Reliance Industries is India's largest paraxylene producer, with 4.6 MMTPA at Jamnagar and Patalganga; IndianOil runs a 360,000 MT per annum plant at Panipat, and MRPL operates a 914,000 MT per annum unit at Mangalore in the former OMPL aromatics complex. The swing in trade has been large. Exports fell from about 1.83 million MT in 2017-18 to an estimated 157,000 MT in 2025-26 and imports rose to about 976,000 MT, turning net exports of about 938,000 MT in 2017-18 into net imports of about 819,000 MT (estimated) in 2025-26. Indian paraxylene prices are now more closely linked to Asian import prices, and they move with crude oil, naphtha and mixed xylene prices and with PTA plant operating rates.
