Nearly all of India's MIBK is used in the west and north. Paints and coatings are the main use and drive most of the growth. Consumption has risen steadily since 2001, and demand grew sharply, about 11% a year, from 2020-21 to 2025-26; conditions favour rapid growth over the next few years.

Reliance's 7,000 tpa MIBK plant at Thane (formerly NOCIL) was India's only producer until it closed in 2006. From then on imports met all demand, until Deepak Chem Tech commissioned its MIBK/MIBC plant at Dahej on 6 August 2026. Having no local plant held growth back, but consumption kept rising on imports alone.

Rising demand for high-quality rubber antioxidants and high-solids coatings has moved both MIBK production and consumption to Asia and mainland China. Anti-ozonants are moving fastest, particularly to China, where several plants have come on stream in the past three years, and MIBK use for anti-ozonants is forecast to grow much faster there than in the United States and Europe. MIBK should also grow in lube oil applications and as a froth flotation agent, especially in active mining regions. Asia, and China above all, will grow fastest, and Indian demand is set to keep pace.
