In India, MIBK dissolves resins in paints, inks, lacquers and other surface coatings. It also separates metals in rare-metal extraction and goes into lube oil additives. And the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves it as an indirect food additive for adhesives, paper and paperboard, and polymers.

India made no MIBK from 2006-07 until domestic production restarted in August 2026, because manufacturers could not compete with cheap imports. Until then imports met all consumption; up to 2025-26 they came mainly from Korea, South Africa and Japan.
