Acetone has registered a negative CAGR of about -0.415 during the last decade, and though demand has grown at a decent pace, poor output has forced a net increase in imports. Acetone's most widespread application is as a solvent and as acetone cyanohydrin, a precursor to methyl meth-acrylate. It is used for thinning polyester resin, cleaning tools and dissolving two-part epoxies and superglue before they harden.

As a heavy-duty degreaser, it is also useful in the preparation of metal prior to painting. Although itself flammable, acetone is used extensively as a solvent for the safe transporting and storing of acetylene, which cannot be safely pressurized as a pure compound.
