Chloromethane
Chloromethane

India makes almost all its chloromethanes, and imports have been negligible since new Dahej plants came up, even as demand grew about 9% a year from 2017-18 to 2025-26.

Demand for chloromethanes in India was an estimated 440 KT in 2025-26. Pharmaceutical makers use methylene dichloride (MDC) as a solvent, and it also goes into paint strippers, adhesives and foam blowing; chloroform is the main feedstock for the refrigerant gas HCFC-22, which is also the raw material for PTFE. Methyl chloride goes into silicones and agrochemicals. Carbon tetrachloride is banned for emissive uses under the Montreal Protocol and now serves only as a feedstock for refrigerants and agrochemical intermediates.

Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals (GACL), SRF, Epigral (formerly Meghmani Finechem), Chemplast Sanmar and Gujarat Fluorochemicals are the leading producers of chloromethanes in India. Installed capacity was about 450 KT in 2025-26 and production an estimated 439 KT: about 98% utilisation, and almost equal to demand. GACL's 105,000 MT per annum plant and SRF's new unit, both at Dahej and commissioned in 2022, helped supply keep pace, and imports fell from about 2,400 MT in 2019-20 to just 433 MT in 2024-25. Chloromethanes are made from methanol and chlorine, so their prices in India move with methanol prices and chlor-alkali plant operations.
