Cellulose acetate is the biggest outlet for acetic anhydride in India, for cigarette filter tow and textile yarn. Pharmaceuticals come next, for paracetamol, aspirin and other drugs, and smaller volumes go into agrochemicals, dyes, flavours and TAED, a bleach activator for detergents. With pharma exports growing and cellulose acetate makers buying steadily, demand in India should rise by over 5% a year till 2030-31.
Jubilant Ingrevia is the largest producer, with about 210,000 MT per annum after its Bharuch expansion in 2023, when Jubilant added a 60,000 MT per annum plant there; Laxmi Organic Industries, IOL Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals and Luna Chemical Industries also supply the Indian market. IOL Chemicals started a 25,000 MT per annum unit in 2023-24, mostly for its own use. Capacity is well ahead of demand. In 2025-26 India exported an estimated 41,000 MT and imported about 12,200 MT, and exports have grown at about 9.5% a year since 2017-18.
