Green hydrogen: Dramatic new developments bring it closer to reality – 18 Feb 2022

India, the first global scale hydrogen capacity announced by RIL speaks of going from making fossil-fuel based hydrogen to green hydrogen based on renewable energy

But the first big step into going straight into green energy has already been taken in Europe, where a steel and a fertilizer producer have joined hands to produce hydrogen using as much as 9.5 GW of solar power

This is eventually a step change, as both steel and fertilizer producers have committed to pick up the commercial hydrogen produced by the JV

Financial closure is expected by summer, 2022

These are rapid technological developments that Indian policy makers and entrepreneurs must keep and eye on even as cost-economics are seemingly uneconomic at this point in time. In India too, there is talk already of using green hydrogen, with the Adanis mulling the possibility of using green energy for a 1 lakh tonne PVC plant. The fact that such a plant is even thought of is one giant step in the right direction
