Syensqo’s circular fluid claim uses mass-balance fluorine accounting
Free article
Syensqo has extended UL Environmental Claim Validation to Fomblin Y, adding the high-performance fluid to its certified circular-materials portfolio. The October 8, 2026 release says the addition occurred in September, following validations obtained in 2025 for selected elastomers and lubricant fluids.
The central recycled-content claim requires careful reading. Around 40% of the fluorine content is allocated from post-industrial recycled hydrofluoric acid through mass-balance accounting. That percentage refers to fluorine, rather than the entire finished polymer.
The release’s footnote states that fluorine accounts for more than 65% of Fomblin Y’s polymer mass. It identifies the resulting allocation to the final molecule as 25% recycled content by weight. Both figures are expressed through the mass-balance system; the document does not present the 40% fluorine allocation as 40% recycled content for the whole product.
Syensqo is also investing at Spinetta Marengo in Italy to expand recycling capabilities and increase fluorine recovery. It says this will improve the availability of recycled raw materials for its specialty polymers portfolio and respond to customer demand for circular fluorinated elastomers and fluids.
The company links the initiative to European critical-material objectives, noting that fluorspar, the primary mineral source of fluorine, is classified as a critical raw material. Recovery from industrial waste is intended to reduce reliance on virgin resources and strengthen local supply resilience.
Certification of the additional product is complete, while the recovery investment is described without a disclosed budget, capacity increase or completion schedule. The release also provides no quantified reduction in virgin-material purchases or lifecycle emissions.
