PS, EPS, SAN & ABS
ps-eps-san-abs

Polystyrene, EPS and ABS are the three largest styrene derivatives representing nearly 75% of styrene demand. Styrenics such as PS & ABS account for a 9% share of the entire market of polymers. Asia is projected to be the leading EPS producer and consumer. The packaging and construction industries are expected to drive the global demand for PS and EPS.

Total Polystyrene capacity in India is expected to reach 478 KTA by 2016-17. Supreme Petrochem, Styrolution and LG Polymers are the major producers of polystyrene in India. ABS demand in India is expected to grow strongly at a CAGR of 10%, owing to the growth in the Indian middle class expenditure in home appliances and automobiles, which will drive the core demand for ABS. Styrolution ABS ltd. and Bhansali Engineering Polymers ltd. are the major producers of ABS & SAN in India. In near future, EPS and ABS will drive demand growth in India.

Global demand for Polystyrene (PS) and other Styrenics such as Styrene-Acrylonitrile (SAN) and Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) was 18 million tonnes during 2010 and 19 million tonnes in 2012. Demand growth for polystyrene has been relatively slower; however, both ABS and SAN have been witnessing healthy growth due to their wide ranging usage in consumer electronics, appliances and automotive sector. By 2015, global demand for Styrenics is expected to reach 22 million tonnes.

Polystyrene demand in the Indian Subcontinent has been below expectations because of competition from other polymers, mainly polypropylene in both packaging and durables, primarily due to cost reasons. PS capacity as well as production has declined marginally while demand has grown, due to which production is struggling to keep pace with demand. This has led to an increased dependence on imports, which increased from 14KTPA in 2006 to 36 KTPA in 2013. ABS & SAN producers will expand their capacities in order to cater to demand growth in India. The ABS Market in India is growing at a CAGR of 9.1% and overall consumption in last 20 years has gone up from a small base of about 20 KTPA to about 150 KTPA in 2012-2013.

ABS demand in India is expected to grow strongly across all segments, given rapid industrialization and growth of the auto sector. There will be an increase in demand of SAN grades, with a focus on consumer and industrial applications.
